Homework Problems

All graded homework assignments are posted and submitted on our WebWork page. Your login credentials are discussed in the "Introduction and Logistics" pre-class video for Day 1.

In addition to the assigned problems, there will also be a number of optional problem sets that are posted, either on WebWork or on this site (or both). Optional problems are never submitted or evaluating for a grade; they are provided to give you another source of practice problems. Optional problems from the text will be odd-numbered, so that solutions are available at the end of the book. Optional problems on WebWork will have answers available immediately upon posting.

Optional Assignments

  • Section 5.5: 3 -- 35 (odd), 43, 47, 53, 59, 67
Non-graded Assignment 3
In addition to the regular homework problems from Pset 3 on our WebWork page, you might be interested in working on the following problems to exercise your skills from section 5.6 of the text.
  • Section 5.6: 5 -- 15 (odd), 25, 29, 39

  • Section 5.10: 5 -- 23 (odd)
Non-graded Assignment 5
In addition to the regular homework problems from Pset 5 on our WebWork page, you might be interested in working on the following problems to exercise your skills from section 5.6 of the text.
  • Section 5.10: 1, 25--33, 43, 44, 45, 55
Non-graded Assignment 6
In addition to the regular homework problems from Pset 6 on our WebWork page, you might be interested in working on the following problems to exercise your skills.
  • Section 6.1: 1 -- 17 (odd), 23, 31
Non-graded Assignment 7
In addition to the regular homework problems from Pset 7 on our WebWork page, you might be interested in working on the following problems to exercise your skills.
  • Section 8.1: 3, 5--23 (odd), 33, 41, 57
  • Section 8.2: 1, 9, 33 (use partial fractions)
Non-graded Assignment 8
In addition to the regular homework problems from Pset 8 on our WebWork page, you might be interested in working on the following problems to exercise your skills.
  • Section 8.2: 11--29 (odd), 49
  • Section 8.3: 7, 8, 11--18, 31 (this is a challenge!)
Non-graded Assignment 9
In addition to the regular homework problems from Pset 9 on our WebWork page, you might be interested in working on the following problems to exercise your skills.
  • Section 8.3: 9, 19, 21, 23, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 (this is a challenge!), 30
  • Section 8.4: What does the ratio test tell you about each of the series from 21--33?
  • Section 8.4: 42 (this is a challenge!)
Note: the answer to what the ratio test tells you about each of 21--33 in Section 8.4 is (in order of problem number, with D standing for "diverges", I standing for "inconclusive," and C standing for "converges": D,D,C,I,C,C,I,D,C,I,I,C,C.
Non-graded Assignment 10
In addition to the regular homework problems from Pset 10 on our WebWork page, you might be interested in working on the following problems to exercise your skills.
  • Section 8.5: 3--19 (just compute radius of convergence), 25, 26
  • Section 8.6: 23, 28, 27 and 29 (don't worry about decimal precision for 27 and 29)
  • Section 8.7: 3, 11--17 (odd), 43, 45, , 47, 51, 53, 59, 61, 63, 65
  • Section 8.8: 3--7 (odd, ignore graphing), 27
What test do I use?
We have a lot of different tests we can use to determine convergence of a given power series. For the following problems, make your best guess at which test you should use to determine convergence/divergence.
  • Chapter 8 review (page 628+): 9--11, 13--18
